Australian High Commission Residence

The House Manager/Cook at the Australian High Commission (AHC) Residence is an important member of the AHC staff, ensuring the smooth running of the home of the Australian High Commissioner and her family, and ensuring official events at the Residence are effectively managed.
This position is a combination of property manager and cook and the AHC is keen the post-holder can encompass both areas of responsibility with confidence. With a significant degree of responsibility, working as a representative of the Australian High Commission, the successful candidate should be a good communicator, a highly effective manager, and a team player.
The Key Duties of the House Manager/Cook include:
- Co-ordinating official functions (receptions and dinners) hosted at the Residence, including the preparation of function areas, supervising sub-contracted staff eg cooks, wait staff), receiving guests, and taking overall responsibility for the management of official events.
- Monitoring facilities and equipment eg swimming pool, pond, garden irrigation system, lighting, generator, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors etc, according to their maintenance schedules. Supervising sub-contractors for maintenance tasks as required.
- Taking overall responsibility for the running of the Residence, including:
(a) Supervision of and assistance to part-time domestic staff and other persons/trades people/contractors who provide services and goods.
(b) Ordering and delivery of services and goods, eg water, gas, consumables
(c) Maintaining inventories for Residence properties eg furniture,fittings, kitchenware and other items
(e) Ordering of food and beverages and maintaining records of expenditure
(f) Liaising with Australian High Commission staff in relation to administrative systems (eg orders, payments) and official event co-ordination.
(g) Answering the Residence's landline telephone, dealing with general enquiries and carrying out general domestic assistance to the Australian High Commissioner and her family.
A taste of the job
Beyond the daily requirements of the House Manager/Cook, the AHC residence hosts large-scale receptions. These include two major annual events - the official Australia Day Reception that takes place in late January, and the official Anzac Day Reception on April 25. Each event involves catering for more than 200 guests.
The House Manager co-ordinates all hospitality arrangements for these receptions including the supervision of sub-contracted temporary staff - chefs and wait staff, and manages the technical aspects of the event. Effective management of these key events in liaison with AHC staff is a crucial aspect of the House Manager's responsibilities.
The Australian High Commissioner also hosts smaller official receptions and formal dinners. On such occasions the House Manager/Cook may be required to act as chef and carry out waiting duties.
The Australian High Commissioner's Residence 'Villa Risq' is a large two-storey private house in Naxxar with extensive gardens and function rooms as well as family areas. The House Manager/Cook is provided their own office connected to a commercial-sized and professionally-equipped kitchen. The office includes a desktop PC and printer. The House Manager/Cook should have experience of using standard computer software eg Word, internet browsers and email.
The House Manager/Cook is expected to work up to 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday) - plus occasional overtime. Hours of duty: Approx. 8am - 4pm (flexible), 7.5 hours per day. Time Off in Lieu is available subject to agreement.
Leave entitlements and procedures are regulated by local labour law. The House Manager/Cook is entitled to 24 days recreational leave on the basis of a 37.5 hour week.
Based on a 37.5 hour week, the per hour rate offered is €9.39, equivalent €19,590 per annum.
An allowance is available for clothing and footwear. Items provided to the House Manager/Cook include a mobile phone. Transport is not provided for the post. A per kilometre reimbursement rate is offered when the House Manager/Cook uses his/her own vehicle on Residence business.
Tax/National Social Security
The employee is solely responsible for payment of Income Tax to the Inland Revenue Department, Malta. The AHC makes the employer’s contribution to the National Social Security Fund on behalf of the employee and AHC deducts from the salary the employee’s compulsory contribution to the Social Security Fund.
